JACKIE SMITH

Jackie Smith is from Sheffield, in Northern England. She originally trained as an animator and has drawn comics since the late 1970s. She's been a T-shirt designer, graphic artist and Youth Arts Worker and has been a freelance cartoonist, writer and illustrator since 1980, and her work has appeared in Knockabout Comics. Other long-term contracts have been with Big Mags and Myatt McFarlane. Jackie says her most revelatory moment was being invited to exhibit at the World Comics Convention in Angouleme, France, which she called “a mind-broadening experience.” She also takes comics and illustration into schools and has used Graphic Classics in her work with excluded teenagers. Jackie draws caricatures and portraits at fairs and sneaks off to the wild peaks to paint landscapes. Present projects include a graphic novel and a series of portraits of scary teenagers.
